Still life in oil paints for beginners

This one day course will take you through the essentials of painting a still life in oils using the ‘alla prima’ technique. This structured course will take you step-by-step through the principles of oil
painting and aims to give you the confidence to take your painting to the next level.

We will cover:

  • Principles and techniques of oil painting
  • Creating an imprimatura layer
  • Mixing paint
  • Using colour and tone to create form and space
  • Developing an interesting composition
  • Methods and techniques for applying paint
  • Observational skills
  • Using mediums

Materials to bring:

  • A range of oil paints
  • An odour free solvent such as Zest-it or Sansodor (please note white spirit or turpentine will
    not be permitted)
  • A selection of brushes in different sizes (including flat and filbert brushes).
  • Linseed oil
  • A 12”x12” or 12”x16” canvas, canvas board or gesso board, depending which surface you
    prefer.
  • Two jars/pots (one for your solvent and one for the medium)
  • A palette
  • Palette knife
  • Old clothes or apron to protect clothing

We will provide:

  • Table easels
  • Additional materials
  • Sketch paper
  • Spare pots
  • Still life display materials

    Weekend painting retreat: Unleash your creativity

    Saturday 14th – Sunday 15th September, 10am-4.30pm

    Cost: £190 per person

    A fun-filled two day workshop designed to help you reignite your love of painting and unleash your creativity. Suitable for people using either acrylic or oil paints.

    We will cover:

    • Understanding colour and using colour confidently
    • Exploring values and creating form
    • Mark making
    • Elements of composition for different effects
    • Creating expression and developing your own style
    • Methods and techniques for applying paint
    • Observation skills
    • Exercises to loosen up and promote creativity

    You will have tailored support from two experienced tutors. Suitable for all levels.

    This two day course that will be packed full of tools, techniques and inspiration to help you unleash your creativity, find your inner artist and take your painting to the next stage.

    Included: Lunch, refreshments, table easel to work on if required, table, water containers, pencil and paper, charcoal, paper towels, materials for specific exercises.

    What you will need to bring: Apron (or old shirt to protect your clothes), paints of choice (your favourite colours in oil or acrylic) , brushes and favourite tool, two canvases/panels, sketchbook, 5 images of your favourite paintings/styles by other artists.

    Core skills in drawing

    This one day course will help you to improve your drawing skills by using a range of techniques and
    approaches. Using a variety of drawing exercises, longer studies and useful tips and tricks this course
    will help you to improve your technical skills and gain confidence in your own ability and style.

    We will cover:

    • Materials and methods
    • Observational skills
    • Relationships and perspective
    • Positive and negative space
    • Expressive line drawing and mark making
    • Using tonal values to create form and impact

    Materials to bring:

    • A set of pencils from HB to 8B
    • A3 sketch book
    • A putty eraser

    We will provide:

    • Table easels
    • Charcoal
    • Sketch paper
    • Additional materials
